JUSTICE

The death of George Floyd has fueled so much unrest within the black community all

around the world, over the past week. Many have taken to social media with the Black

Lives Matter hashtag whilst others have taken to the streets of America, Europe and Asia

in riots and protests against the injustice against black people. When will this come to an

end? How long will we be oppressed? For a young black person, this might be

overwhelming and scary. You may have had to deal with racism, discrimination or

police brutality yourself and you may have asked; Does God see all the injustice done to

me and around me?

The truth is, the God of the Bible is a just God who created ALL humans in His image

(Genesis 1:26, 5:1-2). This means that we are all equally but uniquely important to Him.

However, because of the brokenness in our world, issues like racial injustice exists.

Racial injustice existed in the bible too. The Israelites were enslaved in Egypt for 400

years and in Exodus 2:24-25 we read that God saw the afflictions of people of Israel and

He sympathised with them. After their exodus from Egypt, God gives His people a set of

laws to instil social justice. Such laws included showing kindness and mercy to everyone

especially those less privileged so that there would be peace love and joy among all

people (Zechariah 7:9-10). How should we respond when we live in a world that ignores

God’s ideas of social justice?

Jesus said to His disciples in Matthew 5:43-44; “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love

your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those

who persecute you”. Our response is love because we believe love is the only thing that

will cure racism (1Peter 4:8). We are to seek justice by asking God to have mercy on

those that persecute us and change their hearts. We should always remember that

whether they are the police, classmate or people who don't know, they are still in need

and deserving of God’s mercy. We must not seek out justice for ourselves through

violence, looting, or any hostile behaviour as we all have sinned and fall short of God’s

standard of righteous (Romans 3:23, Romans 12:17-19).

In such difficult and confusing times, it is important for us to focus our minds on the

heavenly perspective, asking God to restore our world by allowing His Kingdom to come

here on earth the way it is heaven.

As we mourn of the loss of George Floyd let us also pray for the Holy Spirit to bring

comfort and clarity to his family. Let’s ask our gracious heavenly father to have mercy on

the police officer that took his life and fervently pray for the salvation of their souls.
